NUB fee negotiations between payers and RI implant centers possible in 2019
On 29 January 2019, the Institute for the Hospital Remuneration System in Germany (InEK) has again granted "Status 1" to the application of the RI Implantation Centers for the Subretinal Implant. Within the "New Examination and Treatment Methods (NUB)" reimbursement system innovative procedures not yet included in the G-DRG, funding is available from the statutory health insurance (GKV).
Not only the medical availability of the retinal implant is of great importance for the affected patients, but also the reimbursement of the implant by health insurances. Only by covering the expenses by the GKV can the therapy become available to patients. Patients with late-stage RP can turn to specialized RI implant centers to discuss both the implantation suitability and the reimbursement by the health insurances with the responsible physicians. The Professional Association of Ophthalmologists (BVA) and the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) have included the treatment option with retinal implants in guideline 25 in autumn 2017. Retinal implants provide a chance for patients with late-stage RP to partially restore functional vision and are currently the only treatment available for this stage of the disease.
